The irradiation process for the conservation of works of art is a method used around the world to disinfect and preserve historical and artistic assets. The procedure, coordinated by researcher Pablo Vasquez, consists of exposing the items to ionizing radiation in IPEN’s Cobalt-60 Multipurpose Irradiator, a technique that destroys the microorganisms that infested the materials. This allows books and works to be handled again without risk to health.
